The Church in Its Place
Kevelaer's pilgrimage began in the 17th century around a small devotional image of Mary, honored under the title Consoler of the Afflicted. Over time, the little image drew generations of Catholics who came to pray for help, endurance, healing, and hope.
Kevelaer is tender without being sentimental. It is a shrine of ordinary suffering: the kind that does not always disappear quickly, but can be carried differently when it is brought into prayer.
