A fortress of prayer.
Above the town of Częstochowa stands Jasna Góra, a fortified monastery the Pauline fathers have guarded since 1382, and within it the icon of the Black Madonna. In 1430 raiders slashed the icon, and the two scars kept on the Virgin's cheek have become part of how she is loved. In 1655 a small garrison held the walls against a far larger Swedish army; not long after, Mary was proclaimed Queen of Poland, and the shrine became the place where Poles entrust their families and their country to her. Pilgrims still walk here for days along old routes, gather for the unveiling of the icon, and pray before an image whose endurance is written on its face.

The Pauline monastery
Pauline monks are given the hill of Jasna Góra and become the guardians of the icon of the Mother of God brought to the new monastery.

The wounded icon
Raiders slash the icon; the two scars on the Virgin’s cheek are preserved in every later restoration and have become part of how the image is loved.

The siege
During the Swedish Deluge a small garrison holds the fortified monastery against a far larger army. The defense becomes a symbol of Polish Catholic endurance, and Mary is soon proclaimed Queen of Poland.

The coronation
The icon is crowned with papal crowns, one of the first such coronations granted outside Rome.

How the monastery gathers on the bright hill
Jasna Góra, the bright hill, is a monastery and a fortress at once. The venerated icon is kept in the Chapel of the Miraculous Image, the basilica stands beside it, and the ramparts that held the 1655 siege still enclose the whole.

How we treat the devotion.
Catholics are not required to believe private revelations as part of the deposit of faith, even when devotion is permitted or encouraged.
Sanctuary of Our Lady of Czestochowa is a shrine built around a venerated icon of the Mother of God, whose devotion the Church has received for centuries. The Black Madonna is honored within the ordinary life of the Church, in the Mass, confession, and the Rosary, and the shrine is distinct from the public revelation that closed with the apostles.
