Why Go
Before the Apparitions, Baptism
The font corrects the order in which Lourdes is often remembered. Bernadette did not first belong to the Grotto. She first belonged to Christ through baptism and to the ordinary life of her parish. Come here after the Cachot so poverty does not become the last word. The sacramental grace given to a child comes before the world knows what God will ask of her.
The Font That Outlived Its Church
Bernadette Soubirous was baptized in the former parish church of Saint Peter on January 9, 1844. That church was later demolished as Lourdes changed, and the present Church of the Sacred Heart was built after Bernadette had left for Nevers. The baptismal font was preserved and transferred here. The present building is therefore not a church Bernadette knew, and the distinction matters. The sacred continuity is carried by the font and by the parish life it represents.
The present church belongs to a later Lourdes than Bernadette's childhood. Its value for the itinerary is not an architectural claim but the deliberate setting given to the older font and the parish memory it carries.

Go directly to the baptismal font, make the Sign of the Cross, renew the promises of your own baptism in prayer, and then give the active parish church the quiet owed to it. Do not plan around the crypt or the tomb of Abbé Peyramale without checking current access.
