Before the Grotto, a Family Home
Come to Boly Mill before the Cachot. Here Bernadette's life is not yet reduced to suffering or remembered only through the apparitions. She is a daughter in a working home, baptized into the Church and loved by her family. The rooms make the later poverty intelligible without allowing it to swallow the beginning.
The Mill of Happiness
Bernadette was born at Boly Mill in 1844 to François and Louise Soubirous. The family lived and worked here during her early childhood, and Bernadette later remembered these first years as the happy time of her life. Economic hardship and the loss of the mill eventually drove the family elsewhere. That fall matters, but Catholic memory begins with the dignity already present: a child received into a family, a household sustained by work, and grace at work long before anyone in Lourdes knew her name.
The mill is a domestic and working place rather than a monumental shrine. Its scale, family rooms, and milling spaces keep the visit close to the ordinary life from which Bernadette came.
