01 · Why people come

Where the angel came first.

A year before the apparitions of Our Lady at the Cova da Iria, the three children reported three visits from an angel who called himself the Angel of Peace, or the Angel of Portugal. According to the memoirs Sister Lúcia wrote years later, the first and third of these visits took place here at the Loca do Cabeço, and the third was Eucharistic, the angel giving the children holy communion. Pilgrims climb to the rocky outcrop to pray the prayers the angel is remembered to have taught.

02 · The story

What happened here.

The year before Our Lady.

FATIMA
  1. A distinction

    Angel, then Our Lady

The apparitions of the angel belong to 1916 and are known from the memoirs Sister Lúcia wrote in the 1930s and later. They are received within the approved Fátima account and are distinct from the apparitions of Our Lady in 1917 that the Church declared worthy of belief in 1930.

  2. Spring 1916

    The first apparition

While the children shelter from the weather at the Loca do Cabeço, they report that an angel appears and teaches them a prayer of adoration and reparation.

  3. Summer 1916

    The second, at the well

The second apparition, according to the memoirs, takes place not here but at the well behind Lúcia's house in Aljustrel, where the angel calls the children to prayer and sacrifice.

  4. Autumn 1916

    The Eucharistic apparition

The children return to the Cabeço, where they report that the angel gives them holy communion and again teaches them to pray in reparation. This is the third and last of the angel apparitions.

  5. 1917

    Then Our Lady

The following year, from May to October 1917, the children report the apparitions of Our Lady at the Cova da Iria.

03 · The devotional heart

Adoration and reparation.

The angel's message prepares the message of Our Lady. It is a call to adoration of God, present in the Blessed Sacrament, and to reparation for the sins of the world. The prayers the children reported learning here, recorded in the memoirs of Sister Lúcia, are prayers of adoration offered for those who do not believe or adore. The Cabeço keeps that Eucharistic and reparative note at the beginning of the Fátima story.

Adoration

The angel's prayer before the Blessed Sacrament.

Reparation

Prayer offered for those who do not believe.

The Eucharist

The third apparition, in which the children received communion.

Preparation

The angel's visits before the apparitions of Our Lady.

04 · How pilgrims pray here

A climb to the Cabeço.

A common way pilgrims pray at the outcrop. The Loca is reached by a short but uneven climb on unpaved ground above Aljustrel and is not step-free; wear sturdy shoes and allow for the hillside path.

Pattern of prayer · not a schedule

  • 02 A time of silence at the rocks The Loca is quiet and set apart. Keep some of the visit in silence.
  • 03 An act of reparation Offer a prayer in reparation, the angel's own theme.
