13:30 to late afternoon
He came here as a small boy from Wadowice with his father, then as a priest, and constantly as Archbishop and Cardinal of Kraków, often alone and on foot along the paths, bringing what he called the difficult and responsible matters that multiplied with office. He came twice as pope: on 7 June 1979, when he gave the main church the title of minor basilica, and on 19 August 2002 for the fourth centenary of the foundation, when he prayed for more than half an hour before the venerated image and left the prayer of entrustment that is still said in the basilica after every Mass. Begin in the chapel of Our Lady of Kalwaria, which opens off the nave rather than filling it, then go out. How far out is the decision of the day.
Give your time to The chapel of the venerated image, and then a real section of the Passion paths rather than a fast circuit of the whole. One worked stretch, walked slowly, teaches the sanctuary better than a hurried lap of it.
If the day runs short: If the transfer has eaten the afternoon, take the basilica, the chapel of the image and the courtyard confessionals, walk to the nearest chapel below the church so that you have at least stood on the paths, and come back another time for the rest. That is a better ending than a route half walked at speed.
